Jenks Cross Country Coach James Strahorn is embarking on an extraordinary 500-mile run across Oklahoma, from the New Mexico border to the Arkansas state line. This ambitious endeavor serves as a fundraiser, showcasing his incredible endurance and dedication to his team, while also attempting to conquer a challenge he faced in a previous attempt.
A Coach's Unyielding Spirit: 500 Miles for a Cause
James Strahorn, the head cross country coach for Jenks, is undertaking a monumental 500-mile run across the entire state of Oklahoma. Starting at the New Mexico border and concluding at the Arkansas state line, this feat is not just a personal challenge but also a significant fundraising effort.
Learning From Past Challenges
This isn't Strahorn's first attempt at the cross-state run. In 2021, he faced severe weather conditions, including 50 mph gusts, extreme heat, and even a snowstorm, forcing him to drop out 350 miles in near Hennessey. This past experience has equipped him with valuable insights for his current journey.
Improved Logistics: Unlike his previous attempt where he relied on hotel rooms, Strahorn will now sleep in his van, allowing for more flexible and efficient rest periods.
Strategic Pacing: He plans to break the run into 40-to-50-mile segments, followed by 1 to 3 hours of rest, optimizing his recovery.
Enhanced Support: The van will carry essential supplies, including food, safety gear, and other necessities, ensuring he is well-equipped for the demanding journey.
Inspiring Athletes and Community
Strahorn's dedication is a profound source of inspiration for his athletes. Senior cross country runner Charli Keely noted, "It's honestly really motivating just to have a coach that's running alongside us, not only doing what we're doing, but so much more." The community is also rallying behind him, with support channeled through a GoFundMe link.
The Road Ahead
Strahorn's journey is a testament to his resilience and commitment. His ability to learn from past setbacks and apply those lessons to his current endeavor highlights his determination to complete this challenging run. The entire Jenks community, along with supporters across Oklahoma, will be cheering him on as he pushes his limits for a worthy cause.
