Two unique stores in downtown Jenks, Able and Co. and Bridges Mercantile, are making a significant impact by providing meaningful employment opportunities for adults with autism. These businesses not only offer locally produced goods but also champion a mission to foster independence and a sense of purpose for individuals with developmental disabilities.
A Place to Thrive
Willie Steele, a 24-year-old employee at Able and Co., the men's store, embodies the success of this initiative. Steele, who has autism, is part of the Bridges Foundation, an organization dedicated to mentoring individuals with developmental disabilities. The foundation aims to equip them with essential work skills and promote self-reliance.
Nikki Jolly, COO of Bridges, shared her enthusiasm for Steele's contribution. "We wanted to give him the opportunity to step outside of what he was doing every day and come work here. And he's owned it completely," Jolly stated. The program's core mission is to empower clients to advocate for themselves and work with a degree of autonomy.
Bridging the Gap to Independence
Able and Co. opened its doors in May 2025, situated next to Bridges Mercantile, which launched in 2018. Jolly explained the inspiration behind the venture: "It was just a light bulb went off that they (students) need something to do past school to keep them independent and employable and social....it just has had a special place in my heart ever since."
Both stores, located at 108b E Main St, Jenks, operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature a variety of locally crafted products. The supportive community surrounding the stores has also played a vital role, with neighboring businesses actively engaging with and supporting the employees.
Steele expressed his gratitude for the program, highlighting its profound effect on his life. "I feel like I do have a place in life. I do have a place in this world," he shared. "Now that I found Bridges, thanks to my mom," he added, reflecting on his journey since graduating high school in 2017.
