Jenks Coach Aims for Record Books with 500-Mile Oklahoma Run for Charity

Jenks High School cross-country coach James Strahorn is embarking on an ambitious 500-mile run across Oklahoma, aiming to break a state record and raise funds for his athletes and the Jenks Food Bank. Strahorn began his journey at the New Mexico border, with the goal of reaching the Arkansas border in under eight days, 11 hours, and 52 minutes.

A Grueling Journey for a Cause

Strahorn's cross-state run is not just a personal challenge but a mission to give back to his community. He is raising money for the Jenks Food Bank and to support his student athletes. This endeavor is particularly demanding given the late July heat, a challenge Strahorn is familiar with after recently competing in the grueling 135-mile Badwater ultramarathon in Death Valley.

  • Strahorn aims to break the existing record for the fastest 500-mile run across Oklahoma.

  • He is running to raise funds for the Jenks Food Bank and his cross-country team.

  • The run is a testament to his dedication, inspired by his own experiences and the desire to motivate his students.

Strahorn's Motivation and Preparation

Strahorn, who also teaches math at Jenks High School, views this run as an opportunity to inspire others, demonstrating that individuals are capable of achieving more than they might believe. He draws strength from the support of his students, family, and community. His preparation includes rigorous training, with weekly mileage sometimes reaching up to 140 miles, and heat acclimation through dry sauna sessions. He acknowledges the mental and physical toll, emphasizing the importance of faith and community support to overcome challenges.

The Route and Support System

The 500-mile route begins in the Oklahoma Panhandle, following Highway 412, then shifting to Highway 270 East, and finally Highway 51 East towards Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Strahorn's wife is part of his support crew, managing logistics and providing rest during the journey. Strahorn plans for short rest periods of 1-3 hours after covering 40-50 mile segments to prevent his body from stiffening.

Key Milestones and Future Plans

A significant personal milestone for Strahorn will be crossing I-35, the point where he had to withdraw from a previous attempt in 2020 due to illness. He anticipates moments of gratitude when passing through towns and seeing supporters. Upon completing the run, Strahorn plans a brief recovery period before returning to coach his team, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his athletes and his passion for running.

A Record Holder's Drive

Strahorn already holds the record for the fastest run across Oklahoma from north to south. This east-to-west journey aims to add another impressive record to his name, further solidifying his status as an accomplished endurance athlete and a dedicated coach. His journey is a powerful message to his runners about pushing limits and pursuing their passions.
