Revitalizing Downtown Jenks
Bryan Wilks, the visionary behind the Ten District project and owner of Miss McGillicutty's, is spearheading the revitalization efforts. He noted that while 27,000 cars pass through the main street daily, the current setup doesn't encourage them to stop. Wilks believes that by introducing sought-after businesses like Lululemon and diverse dining options, downtown Jenks can become a more attractive destination.
"Encouraging the city like hey you've invested a lot of tax incentives in everywhere but the downtown, but who do you think needs it most, we need it most," Wilks stated, emphasizing the need for investment in the downtown core.
A Return to Roots and Vendor Transitions
Wilks views this project as a return to the building's origins, which once housed a furniture store. The goal is to create a vibrant commercial hub that mirrors the success of other revitalized districts in the Tulsa metropolitan area.
Some of the vendors currently operating within Miss McGillicutty's will be relocating. Six vendors are moving to nearby stores, Red's and The Pink Lily. Sherry Bonner, owner of one of the relocating businesses, expressed optimism about the changes.
"I don't just sell one thing in my store, I like antiques, vintage, primitive, new, modern, and I feel like we need the diversity of all of those things," Bonner said, highlighting her commitment to maintaining the unique charm of Jenks while embracing new opportunities. She reassured vendors and customers that while change can be difficult, the transition is expected to be positive.
Construction on the new development is slated to commence on August 1st, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter for downtown Jenks.
